Mary Peltola wins Alaska over Sarah Palin, a Special Election

On August 31, 2022, Mary Peltola wins Alaska a special election and defeats Republican Sarah Palin to complete U.S. Representative Don Young’s term. She will serve the balance term left open by the sudden death of Representative Don Young (R) in March who represented Alaska in Congress for 49 years. After winning, She has become the first Alaska Native member to seat in Congress. Mary Peltola will represent Alaska in the House as the first lady, and the first Democrat to represent Alaska in the House since1973.

As of now, Mary Peltola will serve the house for four months, the remaining term of Representative Don Young (R). After this, she will be eligible to apply as a candidate in the upcoming election in November, where she will be standing for a two-year service period in Alaska.

Peltola said in her interview that she thinks her win shows that Alaskans “want someone who has a proven track record of working well with people and setting aside partisanship.” She added, “I think it also reveals that Alaskans are very tired of the bickering and the personal attacks.”
